Comment on the best score oscar choice

I totaly respect mr A.R.Rahman for his talent (especially his score on WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH is stunning) but his win over Alexandre Desplat's score for THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON was scandalous. It reminded me of the 90s Alan Menken wins. It was a total disgrace for the academy. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE's score didn't have a dramatic impact and was mostly songs and performances that hardly added to the whole concept. Those Indian songs had no sense at all and were mediocre bollywood rythms. Just go find any bollywood film of a respectful caliber and you'll find out that there are many scores much better than the one Rahman composed for the Danny Boyle film. Anyway there will be the time when Desplat's talent will be recognized by the academy.

The Man with a Cloak - First Impressions

The first listening experience from the Raksin box set is the score from the film THE MAN WITH A CLOAK, a film released back in 1951 with Joseph Cotten as Edgar Alan Poe. As i read in the liner notes of the wonderful booklet, Raksin used an unusual 18th century inspired instrumentation for the music and revealed that the unique main theme of the film is based on a 12-tone row using the notes in a way that they would spell the name E-D-G-A-R!!!
Lukas you did it again man!!
The score is not a jaw-dropping experience but still remains as a very noble and sincere attempt by the great composer to compose really good film music.

David Raksin at MGM

Today i received the FSM box. I consider FOREVER AMBER (Otto Preminger - 1947) his best effort and i'm eagerly waiting to listen to his score for THE MAN WITH THE CLOAK (Fletcher Markle - 1951). To be honest i'm not aware of what the other scores would be like. My Raksin collection includes the Varese Sarabande cd of FOREVER AMBER, the Rhino cd of THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (Vincente Minnelli - 1952) and the RCA collection of rerecordings, including LAURA (Otto Preminger - 1944).
